Things that we've considered so far:

  • Preferential treatment to freshman drive teams -- if drive team is made entirely of first year students, you get a score advantage

    • Could also give an award to the best drive team, voted on by other drive teams and determined based not only on driving ability, but on coopertition and gracious professionalism
  • Candy-colored balls = worth more points
  • Have hole instead of sally port/portcullis/etc (we need to check with NEFirst - what defenses will we be allowed to use; what defenses will be part of the playing field kit?)
  • Don't adjust foul rules and other rules in any other way - keep it simple for refs & players

Other ideas we came up with -

  • Last 10 seconds - spy can shoot 3 balls
  • Points multiplier for any points earned in the last 20 seconds
  • Awarding any sort of risk behavior
  • Every goal in last 20/10 seconds = 2x the number of points

The final decision:

There are 2 game tweaks
(1) for new drive teams.
Drive teams (driver, operator, human player) consisting entirely of first-year students will receive a score advantage. A first year student is someone who has had limited drive team experience. He or she must not have participated in any competition drive teams prior to June 1, 2016. The drive team coach is exempt from this rule. First year drive teams will be allowed to place one of the spare boulders anywhere they wish on the playing field.

(2) for the human player.
During the last 20 seconds, the human player gets one orange ball. If the human players scores directly into the high goal, it is worth the usual 5 points. If the human player scores directly into the low goal, it is worth 10 points. If the human player does not score, a robot may play the boulder for the usual number of points.
