So for putting together the playlist, you can suggest a song in this thread, and I'd suggest linking a YouTube video alongside the song to make sure there are no confusions.

I've put the guidelines specified by FIRST in a Google Drive folder: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B1GFIhhMOYsVd3RiWmNKb1lvWUE&usp=sharing.

You can find the same guidelines on firstmusicdjs.com.

One thing I will say: Some of the songs on the "DO NOT PLAY" list aren't that bad at all, and can sometimes contradict what is on the "PLAY" list. For example, even though "Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore has some profanity in it, it's still a very upbeat song that shouldn't be excluded, and a radio edit would be acceptable. However, something like "Anaconda" by Nicki Minaj doesn't really fit at all at a FIRST event and therefore isn't acceptable.

Keep in mind that we're looking for songs that will get people pumped up, which also means that choosing obscure songs isn't a great option either. If nobody knows the song, it's not going to be much fun and not a lot of people can really get into it.

  • Edit you post to give youtube link so the rest of us can listen to the music. Song titles by themselves are not enough. Please do not re-post the same list with links, just edit the existing post.
  • Please cross check your song name with the do-not-play list.
  • And use common sense. It's not just the lyrics, it's also the theme and/or message of the song (if it has any) that matters. Just because there's a sanitized radio version of a song doesn't make it more appropriate. Often times, having a sanitized version says something about the song in general.
  • Regarding Saty's earlier comment - Do NOT use any song that is on the do-not-play list, even if it is also on the approved play list. I don't care what we believe is acceptable or not. If FIRST messes up and puts the same song on both lists, we play it safe and exclude it.

I have to say that if we want a decent playlist that won't have people complaining, we will have to break the "Do not play" list at one point or another. Even at official district and regional events, these guidelines are broken. Keep in mind that even though we want to cater to a wide variety of audiences, our target audience is high school students and young adults, so there are some songs that are on the "Do not play" list that will be acceptable for the event.

Another possible addition to the list:

Mr. Brightside by The Killers -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8bUL0EKuHw -- could be a lunch song? idk

Oh, and an oldie:

Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0c35s3LbhRE -- don't know when it could be used :P

Define "decent playlist". Define "acceptable for the event". By who? There are plenty of songs out there to pick from. If we can't put together a list that meets the guidelines and still keep people from leaving the venue in disgust, we have no business putting on a show. 'Nough said.

I know we really want to cater to everyone... but we can do that while not playing songs on the DO NOT PLAY list. It's called that for a reason!!!! We can't be setting a bad example at our inaugural competition.
